OHS Policy
Scope
This policy recognises that the Health and Safety of every employee, contractor, visitor and ‘other’ person within our business is the responsibility of Macweld management, pursuant to Section 19 of the South Australian Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Act 1986; as amended. The activities and services offered by Macweld include: design – structural, mechanical (ProSteel and AutoCAD); mild steel
fabrication; stainless steel fabrication; project management; on-site maintenance; labour hire; shutdown management and coordination; site installation and steelwork erection; 24 hr Crane Hire
Aim
The Macweld Vision and Values statement affirms, in the values statement that we will strive to provide proactive management of the Health, Safety and Welfare of all employees and others. Macweld will focus on the continual improvement of Occupational Health and Safety Management by using a preventative, risk management approach, using key performance indicators to measure, evaluate and monitor our Occupational Health and Safety Management System to eliminate or control all work related injury and illness. Macweld recognises that all employees are entitled to fair and equitable injury and claims management treatment pursuant to the South Australian Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986; as amended.
Consultation
Macweld recognises that the success of this Occupational Health and Safety Policy and its supporting procedures relies on the genuine input of every employee in the consultative process. To achieve optimal consultation an Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Committee has been formed. Members of the committee comprise of the duly elected and trained Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Representatives/other employees and Operational Manager(s). It is through this committee that every employee shall have input into the systematic, continual improvement approach to their Health and Safety at work. All employees shall be made aware of all Occupational Health and Safety matters through documented committee meeting minutes, toolbox communication meetings, documented key performance indicator data and direct communication with management and their elected Occupational Health and Safety Representatives.
Resources
Macweld will provide adequate resources to ensure the continuous improvement to the Health, Safety and Welfare of every employee and others. The Responsible Officer will determine the amount of resources required; this includes personnel (including the engagement of external expertise), time and direct financial outlay.
Responsible Officer
Pursuant to Section 61 of the South Australian Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Act 1986; as amended, the Responsible Officer for Macweld is the Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Executive Officer has the absolute responsibility to provide a Safe and Healthy workplace for every employee, contractor, visitor and ‘other’ persons operating within Macweld’s business.
Senior Management
Senior Management shall be responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation and continual improvement of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
Senior Management responsibilities include:
- Taking responsibility for ensuring their own Health and Safety at work, following Macweld’s policy, procedures and instructions as per the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Ensuring any person(s) within their area of responsibility and influence follow Macweld’s policy, procedures and instructions as per the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Ensuring Macweld complies with all Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, Regulations and Codes of Practice.
- Ensuring the procedures and instructions of the Macweld Occupational Health and Safety Management System are integrated into the overall business strategic planning process.
- Assessing safety program(s) priorities.
- Promoting a Safety culture throughout the workplace by personal example.
Managers and Supervisors
Managers and Supervisors have direct overall Occupational Health and Safety operational responsibility for their areas of responsibility.
Individual Managers and Supervisors responsibilities include:
- Taking responsibility for ensuring their own Health and Safety at work by following Macwld’s policy, procedures and instructions as per our Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Ensuring any person(s) within their area of responsibility and influence follow Macweld’s policy, procedures and instructions as per our Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Ensuring that the procedures and instructions of Macweld’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System are integrated into every process within their area of responsibility and influence.
- Ensuring the implementation of relevant Occupational Health and Safety programs into their areas of responsibility and influence.
- Ensuring consultation with potentially affected employees before making any decision regarding any change to the design, work process, plant and/or equipment, or workplace layout.
- Promoting a Safety culture throughout the workplace by personal example.
Employees and Contractors including On-Hired Employees
Section 21 of the South Australian Occupational Health and Safety Act 1986; as amended, states the detailed legal obligations placed on employees, contractors and on-hired employees of Macweld.
Individual Employee, Contractor and On-hired employee’s responsibilities include:
- Taking responsibility for ensuring their own Health and Safety at work by following Macweld’s policy, procedures and instructions as per the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Do all such things that are required of him/her by his/her Manager/Supervisor to ensure compliance with the Macweld’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Actively participate in the consultative process regarding any matter pertaining Occupational Health and Safety that could affect their Health and Safety while at work.
- Ensuring that he or she is not, by the consumption of alcohol or a drug, in such a state as to endanger his or her own Safety or the Safety of any other person at work.
- Not intentionally misusing or recklessly interfering with anything that has been provided for their Health, Safety and Welfare. Promoting a Safety culture throughout the workplace by personal example.
Other Persons
Section 25 of the South Australian Occupational Health and Safety Act 1986; as amended, states the detailed legal obligations placed on visitors and other persons when operating within Macweld’s business.
Injury Management
Macweld is a ‘registered employer’ pursuant to the South Australian Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986; as amended; (the Act). To that end, Macweld has no control of workers compensation claims management matters, however, Macweld will fulfil its rehabilitation and return to work obligations pursuant to the Act, in particular, Section 26 and Section 58b.
Policy Implementation
This policy has been developed and implemented by the Macweld Occupational Health, Safety Committee in consultation with Senior Management and the Responsible Officer.
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Responsible Officer and the Macweld Occupational Health, Safety Committee for its relevance,
ensuring it remains up to date with current legislation and any significant change in the business.
